What is a UTM parameter?
A UTM parameter is a small tag you add to the end of a link, like
utm_source=youtube. When someone clicks the link, that tag travels with them,
so your analytics can tell exactly where the visitor came from. UTMs are the standard way
marketers label their traffic, and they work in nearly every analytics tool.
The five UTM parameters
- utm_source is the platform or place, such as youtube, pinterest, or newsletter.
- utm_medium is the type of traffic, such as social, email, or cpc.
- utm_campaign is the specific push, such as summer_launch.
- utm_term is optional and usually holds a keyword for paid search.
- utm_content is optional and separates two links in the same place, like two buttons.
A few tips for clean UTMs
- Stay consistent. Pick lowercase and stick with it, since utm_source=YouTube and youtube are counted as different sources.
- Use underscores instead of spaces so links stay readable and do not break.
